Making Money From WordPress

WP.com blogs are not allowed to monetize. You are allowed a donation button. Check the FAQ section for more about it.

Which doesn’t mean you can’t make a career based on your WP.com blog, it just means you can’t do it directly. I use my blog as cred and now I charge several hundred dollars an hour as a social media consultant. And by god, my blog is NOT businesslike!

@pornstarbabylon: Good point! Like it is with most people who bug us about adsense, 272 hits, 9 posts, 0-6 comments…
And a link to this: http://www.surfjunky.com/?r=smansa2007 (Wonder if that’s within the TOS.)
-
As I understand the TOS, your surfjunky link wouldn’t be allowed. Because you potentially earn money based on the click-throughs from your link, it wouldn’t be allowed.

How about a link to a Tipit account or to simply a notice about Paypal donations being allowed? – would that be allowed?
The last thing I want is my blog to get closed! :)
-
Paypal buttons are certainly allowed. I don’t know what Tipit is or how it works, but if it’s a similar principle to a Paypal account, it’s probably fine. If in doubt you could always contact support directly just be to sure.

Many people think they can make a lots of money from Adsense. But you only start seeing some money if you get thousands of hits a day. You’ll do better by seeking out certain individual sponsors which tend to pay more than Adsense click ads.
I don’t know if self-hosted sites work on this site but run your blogs here to see what your demographics are. http://www.quantcast.com/ I think your blog has to be active for a couple of months before the statistics start showing. If you seek out sponsors, this tool will do well because you can tell the sponsor exactly what your demographic is. I have the ideal demographic, men aged 18-34. That’s what sponsors look for. But I don’t have that much traffic to even start thinking what the next step will be, move elsewhere or stay here and hope ads will be allowed in the future.
The last thing I want is my blog to get closed! :)
Best thing to do is contact support. I’m not sure if it’s still allowed but I believe Amazon links on a blog with original content is allowed.
