Making music streamable vs. downloadable
-
I plan on putting up mp3s of my music (once I get the space upgrade). I am wondering: do I have the ability to allow people to download the songs, or set it to stream them only? The one wordpress page I’ve been to that had music sort of automatically downloaded to my computer–when I clicked on a track to play it, it downloaded to my computer and played in iTunes.
Also, if I want to make an entire album of songs available on my wordpress page, can I do that–i.e., can i have all the songs titles appear together (stacked), so that you click on each song title to play them?

You can easily make them downloadable, but there’s no way to track payment if you’re going to be selling them on the site. If that’s what you want to do, the best way is to host them at a third party site and handle billing from there.

1. Andrey, Could you say a bit more to explain why wordpress is a bad place to host one’s music?
2. Vivian, I read that audio FAQ and it does not adddress my question: do you have the option, on wordpress, to let people stream only, or download? I know from experience that it’s easy to download music from a wordpress page, but can’t find info on a streaming only option.
3. I wasn’t planning on selling music on my wordpress page — just free streaming or download. But is there no paypal option or anything similar here?
4. Justjennifer, I read that thread and wasn’t sure how it applied to me. I would only be hosting my own music to which I own all rights.

Use the WordPress Audio Player to play your music on the blog. That’s the format [audio URLofMusic] which means the music must be uploaded somewhere first, either to your own blog (if you’ve got the space upgrade) or some site that allows hotlinking.
As for LIVEstreaming, I don’t think there is any option at all at WP.com.

If you want someone to be able to play the music on your blog, use the audio player. If you want someone to be able to download it, provide a link like any other link.

@meatyard-it wasn’t clear to me from your post that by “my music” you were talking about music you created and own the copyright to or music to which you don’t own the copyright. Some people apparently aren’t clear on that point.
The free box.net widget allows mp3’s to be played and you can configure it to allow or disallow downloading of the mp3 file.
