Making my main page posts, into summaries

  I need someone to tell me how to make my main page feed into summaries, as I have when they are categorized. I have asked the questions 3 times and the answer that I am given below, does not work. Any help would be great. Thanks
  P.S should I be calling wordpress directly??
  settings—>reading settings—>For each article in a feed, show
  For each article in a feed, show |Full text| |Summary|—>save
