Hi there
I have always had my sites built and maintained by a friend, but he now wants to upgrade my existing site to WordPress for £125 and then to charge £144 a year for a Basic WordPress Maintenance Package – does this sound about right?am considering doin it myself …!
Many thanks

Hi there,
It sounds like you are referring to a self-hosted WordPress site, which are sites that you create on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc. And that this self-hosted site was set up by another professional, yes?
It is worth noting that self-hosted WordPress sites use a different version of the WordPress platform, so if you wish to reduce your costs, you would have the option to migrate your content (pages, blog posts, uploaded media, etc.) but this will not allow you to move your site design as it is now, nor any plugins. Instead you would bring your content over and set it up using one of our pre-installed themes: https://wordpress.com/themes/
If this is appealing to you we provide support to help guide you through doing this yourself. Free sites are supported here in our public forums. Our WordPress.com Personal Plan upgades you to priority email support so you would not be dependent on the public forums here for help. Our WordPress.com Premium Plan steps that up to include live chat help 24 hours M-F.
If you want to move an exact copy of your site (with no changes, exactly as it is now) this is possible but will require our WordPress.com Business Plan, which in terms of cost is getting close to the figures you mentioned above. The Business Plan would provide 24/7 live chat support for any of your questions however, which you may find quite helpful.
