Making page more compact

    I am new to WordPress, looking pretty good so far. Just two minor issues.
    1) Each page has “Site Title” at the top then the name of the page I am looking at perhaps “Welcome” and that seems to take a lot of space so the meat of my page starts too far down the page. Is it possible to get rid of “Site Title” and the name of the page, so the material I want is farther up the page.
    2) Can I increase the width available for my pages? The material I want to see is confined to a narrow strip down the centre.
