making posts public without paying for a plan

  • Unknown's avatar

I have created and ‘published’ blog posts, but they’re locked and not visible to external viewers. It seems I’m being forced into buying an annual hosting plan. What happened to the free blog platform, or what I am doing wrong?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @kimlwhite, free sites are still free, so we’re happy to take a look and help you sort this out.

Can you confirm which site you’re working with and which posts are giving you trouble? I can see posts on kimwhitetravel.wordpress.com. If you’ll send a link to the page folks are having trouble with, we can help.

I’m wondering too if you’re inadvertently sharing links to the editor instead of to your published articles. If that’s the case, please let us know. Just send the link you’ve shared and we’ll help you get it sorted.

    Thanks!

    Hi Kim,

I see you have successfully launched your site, https://kimwhitetravel.wordpress.com/ and it is now public.

The posts titled Burma 1981 and China 1984 are also visible on your site.

Hello there, Let me just add that the links you shared above are only visible to you as they are the links in your site’s Posts dashboard for you to open the Post Editor.

When you go to share your published posts, you’ll want to use the public facing address, like these:

    China 1984

    Burma 1981

You can find that link either by copying it from the address bar of your web browser on the public facing side of your site, or by clicking on the three dots at the right of the post title in the Posts dashboard which will open a menu for you and then clicking on COPY LINK

    Hope that helps too

Let me also add something you didn’t ask about and that is IMAGE SIZE.

Unless you want to fill up your site’s media library very quickly, you’ll want to resize and optimize your images before uploading them to your WordPress.com website. https://wordpress.com/support/media/image-optimization/

Right now your images are 4042 pixels on the longest side which is much larger than they need to be for viewing on the web and certainly for mobile devices. Try for 1200 pixels, 1600 pixels at the most, to cut down on image loading time and for maximizing your Media storage space. Otherwise that 1GB will be used up within a short time.

    Hope that helps too!

thanks to both of you who responded with helpful information. Saved me from tossing the whole project out (and crying). And yes, I will reduce the size of the images – they were scanned at high resolution for printing but I will now go and resize them.
