Making posts scroll through "newer post" and "older post" under a parent categor

  Six weeks ago I created a category (1) with no posts (on Theme 2012), then made three categories with posts, with the category (1) as parent. From the category (1) with no posts, the images and text from the three posts would scroll through “newer post” and “older post”. Now, after making changes, I can’t get it to work again. What step am I missing?
