Making sense of My Stats

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi guys,

I’m confused about what my stats mean. Today they show that my blog has had 15 views but only 1 visitor – and yet I know that more people have visited and read my post from last night. Why do they not show up in the stats as visitors?

    Thanks
    Jo

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • We are experiencing some issues with the visitor stats at the moment. We’re aware of the issue and are working on fixing it.

    My apologies for any inconvenience.

How will we know when it’s fixed rootjosh? Will our stats change? My visitor stats are extremely weird – e.g. All from Greece right now!

  • I will update you when I have any additional information.

  • Stats should be corrected at this point. Missing visitors should be displayed in the stats now.

    Thank you for your patience.

Hi rootjosh – my stats are still all over the place. They can’t be real and completely out of kilter with previous days, months, years (volume of visitors and views plus locations). Very disheartening – please could you have a look …. thank you

  • They do not look particularly out of kilter to me. Your site is fairly new and has not built up significant traffic yet. So fairly minor swings in the number of users visiting can make stats jump up or down when viewing stats.

Give it some time, keep blogging, sharing, and interacting with other WordPress.com sites/users and you will see both a climb in traffic and an a smoothing out of your traffic generally.

Rootjosh – Are you looking at the right blog? I’ve been blogging for 5 years. I have raised this as a private query now. I’m a pro-user and this anomaly is frustrating. Sorry my stats don’t look ‘significant’ to you, but they are to me. Your response is infuriating actually. @timethief where are you ? :)

  • @sallyprosser

My apologies, I was looking at the OPs blog and not yours.

You did have a significant spike in views yesterday. But that isn’t particularly unusual for active bloggers. Typically it means you got linked to from somewhere and got a jump in traffic because of it. If you look, you see you had another one of those types of days Sept 2nd.

Now, does that completely count out some sort of stats error? No. But I’m not seeing an unusual amount of stats weirdness across other sites or user reports. It is worth keeping an eye on, absolutely. But I suspect that your stats will return to normal this week. If they do not, let me know.

Hi rootjosh, You mentioned earlier in this thread that there were WP issues and you were fixing them. The days of 11, 12 and 13 October are completely out of kilter with my other stats. They actually don’t make sense in the dashboard (i.e. if you add up the views per page it is way less than the overall figure quoted). I do have the odd spike but I can account for those spikes e.g. Sept 2nd – I am aware of what caused it. It makes no sense whatsoever that there are 466 views from Greece yesterday. Yes it looks like back to normal today (if a little low) but please could you have someone look into the stats for the 3 days I mention. It makes a nonsense of this month and will skew my whole year’s figures. This matters to me – it’s really demotivating. Thank you very much.

As I mentioned earlier, this usually happens when you get linked from somewhere. If I had to take a wild guess, I’d say it was a Greek forum somewhere that posted or linked to your photo.

There is no evidence to support your wild guess. Where is the link to this forum? As I mentioned before the view stats columns individual figures do not add up to the overall total quoted. I really would appreciate you taking this seriously and investigate further on my behalf.

As I said, it is just a guess. But it is a guess based on the fact that the stats match exactly the sort of trend that would happen in a case such as this (or a social media bump). I have seen it many times before and will see it many times again

view stats columns individual figures do not add up to the overall total quoted.

While I haven’t taken a calculator to them, if you drill down into them, they appear to add up correctly. For example, have you seen this page:

    https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?view=postviews&date=2014-10-12&blog=11831273&unit=1

    As you can see here:

    There are 1200+ views there.
