Making Sidebar visible on Blog in Canape

I just changed my website theme to Canape. I love the look and feel, but there is no sidebar on the blog page and posts. I know there has to be a way to get it in there with custom design, but I’m having a hell of a time doing it.

In custom design, does anyone know what code I can use to change the blog page, and all posts layout to show the sidebar area the way it does on other pages?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You don’t need custom design to get a sidebar. In fact, custom design is not helpful to display a sidebar if the theme doesn’t support a sidebar.

Canape theme shows main sidebar on the right in blog view and on pages, using the “Page with sidebar” template.

You have already set the page template of your blog page to “Page with sidebar”. Now go to Widgets dashboard screen: https://alianneblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php and a widget or two to Main Sidebar area so the sidebar appears on your blog page with the added widgets.

    Hi chaitanyamsv,

That was actually the first thing I did. If the Canape theme supports the sidebar on posts, then there is a glitch somewhere because I have a lot of widgets in my main sidebar to display on different pages. I am able to set visibility on them to show on the “blog” page, but they don’t appear. I do not have the option to make them visible on posts at all, and posts do not allow me to change the template to with or without sidebar.

Also, if you notice, the alignment of posts on the blog page is off, narrow and shifted to the left, so the room is there to display widgets, but for some reason they don’t. Any advice?

  • I would be glad to look into this for you.

Let’s start by giving me a few specific examples – with links – of pages or posts that are not showing the specific widgets you want displayed, and tell me which specific widgets are missing or displayed incorrectly? We’ll try to get things sorted. :)

    Hi Kathryn,

I was able to fix this. It was my mistake, part CSS I had added and part not understanding how the widget visibility feature was set up for this particular theme. I was looking for the posts option in the left-hand drop-down, and only saw page. But when I selected it, in the right-hand drop-down it gave me options to select the type of page as post… it’s somewhat counter-intuitive, but at least I got it working now. Thank you!

  • Thanks for letting me know and I’m glad you were able to get things sorted out!
