Making WordPress inaccessible on older Mac devices
-
I set up my website blog with WordPress in 2015 and have used it on and off to send stories of my travels to friends since then. I am just about to depart on a trip which will be of interest to my friends, only to find that I cannot access my webpage on either my Mac laptop or iPad. This is really frustrating, as it is not possible to upgrade/replace these devices. I’m probably going to be reduced to writing my blog on my android phone – a cumbersome and time-consuming task. NOT HAPPY!!!

Hi there,
To clarify, you are trying to access the admin areas of your site jbcamino.wordpress.com yes? As we add new features and our platform evolves, it can be the case that older devices have trouble connecting.
Can you tell us more about what you tried? For example on your Mac computer, please visit this page and let us know what you see for “Operating System” and “Web Browser”
This will give us some extra troubleshooting info about your computer.
Also, on your Mac (we can look at your iPad afterward) what is the error message you see when you try to access your site, and what is the URL that you are trying to access?
Thanks for the additional info!

Not sure if my initial response went thru or not..I’ve just managed to sign in using the laptop whereas yesterday it was just coming up with the WordPress logo…? Who knows but the iPad is not playing ball. The safari version is 12.5.5 and it won’t accept a later version..ditto trying Firefox.. it won’t download the version needed to access WordPress. The msg on both the Mac and the iPad is Unsupported browser which may not work… Clicking on continue loading now works on the laptop but not the iPad.

Hi there,
The safari version is 12.5.5
That would be the problem here, yes. The WordPress software only supports the two most recent versions of any browser, which in Safari’s case is 14 and 15. Here on WordPress.com we follow the same browser support guidelines as the WordPress software itself.
This doesn’t mean you can’t use an older browser, and many features might still work. But it means some features, built using newer code that the older browser doesn’t understand, won’t work. Unfortunately there’s nothing we can do to prevent this.
You’ll be more likely to experience issues on the WordPress.com My Sites interface, and in the block editor, so perhaps stick to the WP-Admin interface at https://jbcamino.wordpress.com/wp-admin/, and the classic editor to create/edit your posts. But eventually those will also stop working as the software continues evolving.
If you’re able to install another browser, like Firefox, Chrome or Opera, you might be able to get a more recent version that still works, so please consider that as well.
I realise this isn’t the solution you were looking for, but let us know if you have any questions about this.

Thanks very much for the explanations- very helpful. I’ll obviously have to start considering getting a replacement for the iPad..sigh.. 😊
