Malware in stats
-
Hi,
My stats for today seem to present something impossible… The number of visitors compared to the huge number of times someone went to the home page and compared to the number of other posts visited just doesn’t seem to be realistic or possible.
I’m wondering if there is malware affecting my stats… I’ve also had a lot of spam comments to delete lately, so there might be a connection to that…
I’m uploading a print screen of my stats as they were this morning… Thank you for checking this out and keeping everyone safe on WordPress… Everyone really appreciates it.

@96isaiah your site is getting more home page traffic than it typically does. But no worries; that’s not malware. Someone probably shared your home page somewhere, because I noticed you have more views per visitor as well, suggesting people are landing on your home page and exploring other pages of the site.

Thank you, torres126 for passing this along… I really appreciate it.
supernovia, thank you for your reply… It still does not make sense to me, because if someone shared my home page, each person that received that share and then visited should have counted as a visitor.
I usually do have some people who explore a bit, but not this much… It just seems odd — especially when I’ve also been getting quite a bit of spam lately, whereas spam used to be rather rare.
I’m sure you all at WordPress keep an eye on stuff like this and thank you for your expertise in this area… Have a great day.

each person that received that share and then visited should have counted as a visitor.
Yes, that is correct. But if one person scrolls down your front page, every time new posts load on that page it counts as a new view. It’s still the same visitor, though.

Hi kokkieh,
Thank you for that info… In glancing through the titles for my posts for the last month or so, very few are listed in the stats list of posts visited on that day, December 8… Some of those posts listed in the stats are “pages” that are always listed in the right hand column of my site.
Guess I’m still puzzled… The stats for today seem more normal… Things like this just keep me thinking… Maybe that will stave off dementia and that would be good.
Thank you for caring… Have a great day.

Hi again, kokkieh,
Here I am still thinking about this puzzle… So, I downloaded the stats’ list of posts visited on December 8 and checked on their posted dates… There are a few possibilities of scrolling that would have led to a visit counted… That would be what you were describing.
But, the vast majority of the posts visited are years, months and days apart, making scrolling an impossible scenario… The only possibility that comes to mind is that someone or a small number of people were using the calendar that is in the right hand column of my site — but, that would mean a lot of reading for a few people.
Whatever happened, things seem to be back to normal today… No more binge reading or surfing or whatever.
Thank you for everything and I hope you have a great day.

If someone is just scrolling down your site’s front page without opening posts it won’t record visits on individual posts. Those views would all be for the Home page.
And a new visitor viewing posts very far apart can be explained by them viewing a specific tag or category, or there may have been a link to an older post appearing in the Related Posts section on a more recent post they opened. It’s actually quite easy to jump around between posts on a site like that if you’re curious upon visiting a new site – that is how WordPress.com is designed, to make it easy for visitors to explore your site, sample your content, and decide if they want to stick around.

Hi kokkieh,
That explains a lot… And that is good information for everyone to know… Thank you for clarifying these things for me… I really appreciate it… Have a wonderful day.
