Managing Bulk Products

  • Unknown's avatar

I wanted to try a free trial because I paid and used other platforms only to find out that they did not work as I had thought.

We are a lighting company and I have about 800,000 products I want to take online. With this much data, you can imagine that BigCommerce and Shopify struggle because of limitation restraints. I receive an FTP each night with updated inventory, that I need to import/sync with my site. From what I understand about WordPress, they do not support FTP and the only limitation is a file of 2GB.

So, assuming I am able to connect my FTP file via the API, and keep the file in sizes of 2GB or less could I import these each night? Would I be able to do actual modifications in bulk to products? Especially with variants.

Please help me know if WordPress is worth my time to be able to work with this type of solution.

  • Hi there,

We do not offer free trials on WordPress.com, but we offer a full refund on all our plans for 30 days, should you upgrade and find we don’t meet your needs.

From what I understand about WordPress, they do not support FTP and the only limitation is a file of 2GB.

WordPress is the name of the software. FTP is a service offered by your hosting provider, a way to directly access your site’s files on your host’s servers, and has nothing directly to do with WordPress. File size limits also depends on your host, as it depends on how your host configures your servers.

If you meant WordPress.com, then we do offer FTP access on our Business and eCommerce plans. I’m not aware of any filesize limits when you upload a file via FTP – the only filesize limits we have is on video files uploaded to the media library.

So, assuming I am able to connect my FTP file via the API

I’m not sure what you mean here.

An API is a protocol that allows you to interact with a site via third-party platforms, for example, if you have an app for your site that lets you manage content, rather than logging into the site’s back-end via a browser, that app would be using the API.

FTP is a protocol that lets you transfer files from your computer directly to your hsoting provider’s servers, using special software like FileZilla.

I’ve never head of using FTP via an API, so can you expand a bit on what exactly you want to be able to do?

For bulk importing or modification of products you’d use neither FTP nor an API, but rather the importing feature of the ecommerce plugin you use. For example, the WooCommerce plugin supports CSV imports – you use a spreadsheet program like Numbers or Excel to create a spreadsheet of your products with all their required attributes. As long as you format this correctly, you can then import it to WooCommerce from within the dashboard:

    https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/product-csv-importer-exporter/

This feature comes built into WooCommerce, though they also offer additional add-ons you can use to further expand the importer functionality.

If you have any questions about that, you can contact WooCommerce support directly at https://woocommerce.com/contact-us/ – click the Question about an add-on I want to buy option and click the Contact link there.

If you have any more questions about the features we offer here on WordPress.com, please let us know.
