Managing Overwhelming Spam Folder
-
Hi I haven’t really had a problem with spam on wordpress before, but within this last month or so I’ve been getting thousands of spam comments in my Akismet folder, and they seem to be coming from the same places and some sort of “lolita porn” spammers. It’s really annoying because there’s so much that if there were actual legitimate comments that ended up in my spam I would miss most of them. After scrolling through a few pages of the spam today, which I normally don’t bother to do because there are so many pages, I saw 2 legitimate ones right away that I would have missed out on since they were buried in my spam folder. Is there any way to block this spam permanently since it seems to be the same type over and over constantly? It’s recognized as spam and I continuously empty my spam folder, but it just keeps coming in huge amounts. Thank you to anyone in advance who replies.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just keep marking the spam comments as “spam” and Askimet will learn.
As for the legitimate comments,
99% of the time un-spamming a comment will prevent it from happening again in future.

Ok thanks 1tess, that’s what I’ve been doing so I guess that’s all I can do really. The legitimate comments I noticed are usually from people who I’ve never been contacted from before or they just leave a comment once. So even if I unspam them there are others who will write who may end up in the abyss of my spam folder because it’s their first time writing. I guess there’s nothing I can do about that though. And I tried to see if there was an option for disabling comments on my “About” page since that was the one that was getting all the spam, but it seems like you can only do that for posts?

You can override the default settings for comments you set up here > Discussion > Settings for future comments on any individual page or post. Your edit the page or post and follow these instructions.

Thanks timethief, I was looking at those instructions last night but I couldn’t get them to work for me. I just now figured out why I wasn’t seeing those boxes for disabling and enabling comments, it was hidden under the “Screen options” in the right corner! Thank you! :)
