Managing Posts

I am a new blogger and am having trouble setting up my blog the way I want. I don’t think I understand the WordPress design.

I want my blog to have its main page. I am blogging about education, but will also delve into other areas from time to time such as holiday recipes and having a place where people can share recipes. However, I don’t want readers who a looking for things to use in their classroom to have to see recipes when the come to the blog.

I originally thought that I needed to set up pages and that each post could be placed on the appropriate page, but that didn’t work. Then I tried setting up categories which enables me to post topics to the separate categories, but everything I post stills shows up on the main page. Is it automatic for new posts to show up on the main page of a blog? Perhaps I am confused by the whole set up.

If someone can explain to me how this works, I would really appreciate it.

You could not have the posts page as the main page. See http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/02/20/having-a-static-page-at-the-front-of-the-blog/

Also, if you delete your main blogging page, or don’t show it, you could get people to look at posts through categories.
