Manual WP core update (due to permissions issue on AWS)

  • Unknown's avatar

I attempted to update a WP site and it failed with the following feedback: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.: wp-admin/includes/update-core.php

The site owners updated the owner to ‘apache’ and folder and file permissions to 755 and 644, but the update still fails. The site is currently hosted at AWS after being migrated from Bluehost. I think this is the first WP update run since migration. Updates ran smoothly before migration.

The owners are looking into what else might be tweakable via AWS, and I’m thinking that if there are no more AWS levers to try, we may have to do a manual update of WP. I’ve found a few references (eg https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/updating-wordpress/) but have not found any notes about what the front end experience is like during the process. Between WP file deletions and uploads, and plugin deactivation, updates, and reactivation, it seems like the site will could be down for a significant chunk of time. Is there something like ‘maintenance mode’ for a manual update?

Also, if anyone has encountered that error and could only resolved it with more than permissions settings, I’d like to hear about it.

    Thanks!

  • Hey there,

It sounds odd that routine updates to WordPress core can’t be run and it indicates something at a server level… and you could be right with regards to levers to try…

How did the migration take place exactly? Did you use a plugin like All in One WP Migrate?

If I can make a suggestion… If I were in your shoes, I would look to rule out hosting providers at this stage…

We offer monthly business plans, so there’s nothing stopping you from migrating a copy of the site onto WordPress.com, and seeing if WordPress can update. It can be done under a temporary domain, and so would not affect the site.

This is how this could be done: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-an-entire-wordpress-site/

If the updates run on WordPress.com (which I suspect they will), then it would seem that using AWS, may not be the stablest of environments for the site.

It may be worth experimenting with the potential WordPress.com has, even if it’s just for one or two months, and if need be, using WordPress.com as a solid foundation for the future.

This is just an idea and I hope it helps with troubleshooting. :)
