Manually add email addresses of followers

  I am new to WordPress and have set up a blog for an upcoming bike trip. We have 40 or so friends and family that wish to receive notification when we do a new post. Can we add them manually, or do they have to subscribe themselves? Thanks in advance for any help.

  They will have to subscribe themselves since they have to respond to a confirmation email that will be sent to them.
