Manually inputting data into wordpress

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve googled this and all but cannot find a resource to help me manually insert data into a wordpress database, any suggestions?

Yes. You have chosen to have a wordpress.com blog. We cannot edit the underlying code for our themes here as we are all blogging on the same shared multi-user blogging platform. We can purchase an upgrade change some aspects relating to theme appearance only through css csutomization. For details please consult this thread http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=6406&replies=9

If you wish to be able to edit the underlying code of a blog template then you can go to http://wordpress.org and download a free template that you can alter.

Um, TT they’re not asking about the themes.

It would help us help you if you told us where you were coming from or if you’re using another program currently. Right now you don’t give us anything to go on.

Yes TT you are a bit off course, but thank you.

Sorry for lack of detail but the problem is I am not transferring from another platform, basically I just have txt and MS word files of different writings over the years.

I have some programming abilities and would prefer to write a script that used mysqladmin or something command line based to manually insert this data into my blog.

So say I had a group of essays I wanted to insert, I would like to insert them into the database via specific category through this method. This way, once I figure out how I can accomplish it I can insert data whenever I want w/o having to copy and paste over and over again.

    Hi there,
I’m back again because I can’t learn how to answer questions without jumping in the deep end and trying to swim. drmike will double check everything I say so not to worry if I’m off course. He’ll understand you and he’ll correct me where required.

I’ve been sensing, although I could be wrong, that you are looking for access to database files that here at WP MU we users do not have access to and only sysadmin does.
If you mean javascript then that’s a “no go” on our WP MU multi-user blogging platform for security reasons. The wordpress MU programming strips out javascript, forms. iframes, embeds, etc. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/javascript-can-i-use-that-on-my-blog/
We can upload *.txt files just as we upload images.
The WP MU programming will also strip the extra code out of MS Word files http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/09/why-not-to-use-word/
Perhaps your best bet when it comes to using a WP MU blog for your purpose is http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/01/20/xml-rpc-and-desktop-apps/

The only thing I can think of is having you grab a copy of the regular wordpress from http://wordpress.org and having you install that in your own current space or with a host. The 2.1 release has an exporter that will kickout a *.xml file that can be imported here at wordpress.com

For security reasons and because we’re in a shared environment, we’re not allowed direct database or file access here at wp.com. You can do that with the regular wordpress though.

The only other thing I can think of is to direct you to the this page. wp.com does support that and you can post using that method. You could probably write a script for that.

    Hope this helps,
    -drmike

Woops, perhaps I am in the wrong forum, this forum is specific for blogs actually hosted on wordpress.com? I am running WP separately at a webhost maybe I should direct this elsewhere.

    Thanks

Yes all blogs here are hosted by wordpress.com. And yes you are in the wrong forum. Too bad you didn’t see the pink sticky “please read me first” post at the head of the forum. Please go to http://wordpress.org/support and ask your question there. Happy blogging.
