Many problems after transferring wp.com blog to self hosted site.
-
I started a blog on wordpress.com: jadezone.wordpress.com
I then transferred this blog to self hosting at: thejadezone.com
I also paid for site redirect through the WordPress store so that people visiting the old address would be redirected to the new address. Now I am experiencing a bunch of problems:
1) The ”likes” that use to appear on my posts no longer appear. I do not understand why these cannot transfer over if everything else can, such as the comments and tags. I really wish that WordPress would find a solution to this, because now it looks like nobody ever liked my posts.
2) Although I paid for site redirect, links to my individual posts on other websites – like reddit – no longer function.
3) My stats did not seem to transfer over. When I visit the jetpack stats it says that I can see enhanced stats at my old site, yet when I go there it only shows stats from the time after I transferred my site. In other words I can no longer see the stats from before transferring the site. Its as if they were simply lost.
4) I migrated my followers over to the new site (19 of them), yet the following day I had 3 new followers at my old site even if it was redirected using site redirect. I feel like I should migrate these 3 new followers over but I am worried that it will over-write the original 19 and I will be left with only 3 followers total. Maybe I am wrong, but I am nonetheless worried.
In conclusion I simply deactivated the site redirect so I am back to square one, using my old WordPress.com site. This way I can see the original ”likes” on the posts as well as the enhanced stats. However, now my 19 followers are at the other site and I am unsure if I should migrate them back. Also, now I feel like I paid for a hosting account and site redirect for nothing…just to simply come back to square one.
Any help you can offer in resolving these issues or giving me info on what I should do would be much appreciated. Most importantly though is that it would be great for WordPress.com to find a way to transfer the ”likes” over…

As far as I know likes cannot be transferred. The introduction of the like button pretty much slaughtered commenting. I don’t pay them any heed as any button clicking money can click the like links and many liker button spammers do that to get traffic back to their own commercial sites.
Staff can and will transfer your stats and subscribers for you provided you have installed and activated Jetpack.
They will also deal with your other issues when they work their way forward to this thread.

Hi Jade,
1) The ”likes” that use to appear on my posts no longer appear. I do not understand why these cannot transfer over if everything else can, such as the comments and tags. I really wish that WordPress would find a solution to this, because now it looks like nobody ever liked my posts.
Please note that these are WordPress.com likes. The users were liking with their WordPress.com accounts, so these cannot be transferred outside of WordPress.com.
2) Although I paid for site redirect, links to my individual posts on other websites – like reddit – no longer function.
Please note that the site redirect will only work if you keep the same permalink structure on .org as your .com site.
If you take a look at our Site Redirect guide, you’ll see it states:
Please note: In order for the Site Redirect to work correctly, the permalinks on the new site (the one you’re redirecting to) should match those at WordPress.com. WordPress.com uses the following permalink structure:
3) My stats did not seem to transfer over. When I visit the jetpack stats it says that I can see enhanced stats at my old site, yet when I go there it only shows stats from the time after I transferred my site. In other words I can no longer see the stats from before transferring the site. Its as if they were simply lost.
I can merge your stats for you. If you decide to make the switch to .org all the way, let me know and I can merge them.
4) I migrated my followers over to the new site (19 of them), yet the following day I had 3 new followers at my old site even if it was redirected using site redirect. I feel like I should migrate these 3 new followers over but I am worried that it will over-write the original 19 and I will be left with only 3 followers total. Yes. This is expected. Please note that switching to self-hosted does not mean that your WordPress.com is automatically deleted. If you want these followers moved, I can do that for you. Just reply to confirm. I would recommend adding a text widget or post to your site making aware that you have moved. Or you can just set your WordPress.com site to private by going to Settings > Reading in your Dashboard.
Let me know if you have any questions with this!

Thank you Grace for the quick reply and answers!
I had indeed read about the permalink structure on the site redirect page but I must admit I was/am a little confused – since I exported the site to xml. from wordpress.com and imported that xml. file into wordpress.org – I figured the permalink structure would simply stay the same. I will now go back and look things over to make sure that my permalink structure is indeed the same.
I would appreciate the stats merge over, but I am going to take a night or two to sleep on it before deciding whether or not to make the switch to .org all the way. I hope that it will not be an inconvenience for you if I can let you know in the next few days. For now I am not sure I want to lose the ”likes” on my posts and that is what is blocking me from just going ahead with .org all the way.
If I do request that the 3 new followers be moved over to the .org, will this over-write the original 19, or will I then have a total of 22 followers? And if going forward I get new followers at the wp.com site can I simply continue to merge them over each time?
Last but not least, if I set my old site to private, what will happen to links on other webpages? Will the site redirect function for this if the permalink structure is correct or will the person clicking on the link fall on a ”private” page?
Also, I do not know where I can or should leave feedback, and while I understand and appreciate your explanation, I sure hope that a solution to transferring the ”likes” can be found in the future.
Again, thank you for so kindly answering my questions. It is really appreciated!

Hi Jade.
I have merged your stats and transferred over the remaining 3 followers. Your followers will have updated to 22.
If I may ask, why are you moving to self-hosted? If something like likes is holding you back, then it might be a good idea to stay on WordPress.com.
I’d only recommend moving to self-hosted, if the reason is that something you need is not possible on WordPress.com – such as a specific plugin.
Last but not least, if I set my old site to private, what will happen to links on other webpages? Will the site redirect function for this if the permalink structure is correct or will the person clicking on the link fall on a ”private” page?
Ah, my mistake. If you are doing a site redirect you can leave it public as it will automatically redirect to your new site.
Also, I do not know where I can or should leave feedback, and while I understand and appreciate your explanation, I sure hope that a solution to transferring the ”likes” can be found in the future.

Thank you once again Grace! You are simply pure awesomeness!
The reason I moved to self hosted is that I wanted more control with keywords and SEO. I think there is a plugin for this (inputting keywords).
Although my wp.com blog has my name all through the site, in the titles and text of the posts, and the posts are all authored by me with my name, when I do a query in google using my name my blog does not show up in the results.
I figure that by using that plugin to input keywords, I will be able to input my name as a keyword and then when I do a google search of my name, my blog will show up…
Again, thank you so much for your time and for moving my followers over :)

Gotcha. That makes sense. You may actually find that your SEO is better on WordPress.com because we have great SEO to begin with. You can read more about this here:
If you want to increase your SEO take a look here:
However, if you want to do it yourself then going to self-hosted is a valid reason.
Cheers!

I have both wordpress.com hosted blogs and self hosted WordPress.ORG installs. There is no SEO plugin that can compete with the Google juice (search engine juice) that we draw from being hosted on sub domains of WordPress.COM. Plugins are for those who do not know how to use keywords and keyword phrases effectively, without keyword stuffing. Please read:

Sorry but when it comes to this subject raincoaster and I are on top of it and I could not resist responding to this myth that using plugins results in better SEO on WordPress.ORG installs when it isn’t. -
Sheesh! Though I am not actively blogging here these days I could publish a lengthy rant on all the myths about WordPress.ORG blogging being better than WordPress.COM blogging. Here’s what I think in a subdued format 7 Reasons Why I Like WordPress.com Hosting. ;)

Thank you so much for putting me on the right track regarding SEO. I think that after all I will keep using wordpress.com instead of wordpress.org. With that being said, would it be possible to transfer my followers back from the org. site to the com. site? Is this something that I can do myself so that I am not bothering you?

No worries. I was able to transfer the followers back to your WordPress.com site.
Cheers!
