Map Block – Marker for Rural Areas

I am using the map block but have noticed that Map Box requires an existing physical address rather than say a lat/long value.

When you enter a lat/long value it seems that the nearest address is returned (although some are quite a distance away as well).

I poked around the settings but could not find a magic button that allowed me to place such locations. Has anyone else been successful or know a trick as to how the Map Block can return a lonely spot here on planet earth?

My next step is to go and look at a Map Box account/token but before I climb that mountain, always good to ask the dumb questions. If you want an example, try using: -114.494894, 53.219480. The location should be in the center of a small lake, the returned locations are in some cases over 100km away.

  • Mapbox doesn’t support latitude/longitude, but you should be able to just drop a pin wherever on the map: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/map-block/#edit-the-map

Alternatively, Google Maps support latitude/longitude: https://wordpress.com/support/google-maps/

Thank you Mac Manx. I figured as much vis Mapbox and lat/long and will go with Google.

Try the above coordinates and put a marker in the middle of a lake. I had followed the instructions provided but Mapbox seems to require an address. Not a big deal now in that I will abandon that technology and use Google. Nevertheless a detail you may want to add to the documentation so the next poor sod like me doesn’t take as long to come to the same conclusion.

Once again, much appreciated. I have an email somewhere in the wordpress.com ticket system on the same question that you can close.
