Map existing domain to wordpress site

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to add my own domain to my free word press site. I may also wish to upgrade in the future. For some reason, whenever I try to navigate to a section where I could map my domain, add or make a purchase, make changes, the page will either not load or respond.

Have you registered an underlying .wordpress.COM blog to map from to the domain URL? That is required.

WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/

See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/ offered by WordPress.com.
    Premium bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/
    Business bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/

Note that each upgrade bundle applies to a single blog only and is for a single year only when it is due to be renewed.

We all pay in full for every upgrade at the time of purchase. Make sure you read the comparison very closely do you know exactly what the restrictions and limitations on WordPress.COM blogging are: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard and purchase upgrades at > Dashboard> Store > My Upgrades
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/

Your billing history will be at Dashboard > Store > Billing History
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/billing-history/

Your only options for payment are found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/payment/

Then you need to set up domain mapping. This is not done for you.
Read Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

In order to map to a domain URL one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.

All that changes when you are domain mapping is the URL and nothing else. The content stays exactly where it is. What domain mapping does its create a seamless transfer between the underlying .wordpress.com blog URLs to the new domain URLs no matter where they are on the internet. Visitors who click the underlying .wordpress.com blog URLs will be seamlessly redirected to the exact same content under the new domain URLs.

Please read Domains: Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

    I own a .ca domain

What is the exact URL please?

Please wait patiently for Staff help. They have a backlog.

On which page are you trying to add the domain? The correct page to do that is this one:
    https://wordpress.com/domains/

What exactly do you mean by “nothing happens”? Do you click on the Map It button and the screen doesn’t change, you get a blank screen, and error message, etc?

Please make sure that you both have third-party cookies and JavaScript enabled in your browser, otherwise the upgrade pages won’t work correctly. You can also try clearing your browser cache and cookies, and updating your browser/use a different browser and see it that makes any difference.

I am logged in as admin – my blog address nmera.wordpress.com. When I click on “Domains”, the screen doesn’t change. When I click on “Settings” the page will appear but when I click on:
    Site Address
    Add a Custom Address
Buy a custom domain, map a domain you already own, or redirect this site.
    the page does not change.
Also when I click on Change Site Address option, the page does not change.
I am using Safari version 6.2.8 with Mac. I have Javascript enabled and third party cookies allowed.
    thanks

  • I suspect the problem might be with Safari. That browser is currently on version 9. Version 6 is over three years old, and might not be compatible with the code used to create the My Sites pages. I tried opening those pages using Safari 6 and it wouldn’t work for me either, but in Safari 9 it works as it should.

While we try to keep the website compatible with as many browsers as possible, it’s not always practical and if you’re using a browser that’s too outdated some features will stop working eventually, as it appears to be the case here.

If it’s not possible for you to upgrade to a new version of Safari, which would mean upgrading your OS version as well, can you please install another browser like Chrome or Firefox and use that to purchase the upgrade instead? You will most likely need a different browser in any case, as more and more features will stop working on Safari 6 as it becomes more outdated.

Yes, it is looking like an outdated Safari issue – I will do the upgrade asap to El Capitan for the most recent version.
In the meantime, I will use Chrome on my mobile device to access WordPress.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Let me know if you still have problems even after updating or with another browser.
