Map or transfer domain

  Can I map the domain first and transfer it at a later date, or does it need to be done at the beginning?

  Hi there,

  Domain Mapping and Domain Transfer are two different things.

  Domain Mapping means that you connect your domain with your WordPress.com site, but you renew the domain at your registrar (where you bought the domain), and renew your site plan here at WordPress.com.

  Domain Transfer means that your domain’s registration is moved over to WordPress.com and we then become your registrar, so all future renewals of your domain and plan for your WordPress.com site are managed and paid on your WordPress.com account.

  So if already purchased a domain name and you prefer to keep your domain registered with your current provider, you can use it with your WordPress.com site by domain mapping.

  And yes, later on, if you want to transfer your domain to WordPress.com, then you can easily do that also.
