Only you can decide what you see as an advantage or a disadvantage. For me I personally wouldn’t buy a domain elsewhere to map it here as I would have the complication or maintaining two accounts with two companies. But there is always the possibility that renewing your domain where it is now might be cheaper than the renewal cost of the domain (after the first year) at WordPress.com. And there are a few domains that can’t be transferred here and then mapping becomes the only option.

Hi @samridhi786, mapping is free with your paid plan. You’d just need to continue renewing it at your existing registrar.
Transferring extends your domain’s expiration date by one year. Then you’d renew the domain each year with us. You can see full pricing here.
