Mapped domain not connecting to website

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi everyone,

We have created a website which we’ve mapped to our domain hestan.uk.com (registered elsewhere). Our domain registrar has also updated the NS to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM, NS2, NS3.

However, this URL now redirects to uk.com.

Our registrar has said that hestan.uk.com is correctly connected to the wordpress nameservers and that it resolves through to them successfully.

Can anyone please advise on what we should do?

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    HI, @hestanuk,

The name servers are not set up correctly, at this moment in time.

You may confirm this by typing in your url on this page. It will give you information on how to proceed.

I would send that information there to your domain registrar.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Hi @christinemaze, thanks for your reply.

I’ve spoken to them but they are adamant that the nameservers are set up correctly (here’s a screenshot)

They have said that a CNAME record at wordpress’ nameservers for host “@” or “hestan.uk.com” is pointing back to uk.com which looks like the source of the problems.

Since we have only mapped the domain and not update the dns records within, how do I explain to them that the problem is on their end?

CORRECTION: Since we have only mapped the domain and not updated the dns records within WordPress, how do I explain to them that the problem is on their end?

Hmm… so, has it been 48 hours? It could be it just hasn’t caught up yet.
See at the bottom of the screenshot it takes up to 48 hours.

But that isn’t explaining the map to the uk.com unless that is the default hang out spot for your registrar.

I feel like I’m missing something obvious here, I’m going to tag staff (with the modlook tag) to take a look for us. Please be patient as response times are anticipated to be longer than normal this week.

Let us know if it resolves in the meantime. Thanks.

    Thanks @christinemaze.

The name servers were updated 2 weeks ago so there must be something else.

Could it be that the uk.com domain name is the problem? In WordPress’ backend, I keep getting the prompt message “hestan.uk.com’s CNAME records should be configured.”

Okay, so high-level let me make sure you and I are on the same page.

You have a domain (hestan.uk.com) through another registrar, right?
You want that domain to map to http://hestanuk.wordpress.com
Is this correct or am I missing something?

I would go through the Map Existing Domain document from top to bottom and see if you missed a step.

I’ll be back in a bit to look again. But this thread is tagged for staff in the meantime.

    This is correct.

I’ve just gone through the steps on the page and we have completed all the steps but it still isn’t showing correctly.

Thanks for looking into this so far.

No problem. Sorry I didn’t get you to the right place BUT staff will respond and will know quickly what I seem to be missing. :-) Just be patient at this point.

  • Hi there,

Domains like hestan.uk.com, registered at uk.com, are not regular domains, but are considered subdomains. Someone purchased the domain uk.com and now sells subdomains off of that.

If you wish to use it on WordPress.com, you will need to follow the directions below:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/#mapping-a-subdomain-when-the-domain-is-registered-elsewhere

Note that you will not be able to use email forwarding or DNS management.
Alternately, you can register a standard domain through WordPress.com or other domain registrars like GoDaddy, Namecheap, and dozens of others.

Let me know if you have any questions and if you need help setting things up on this end. Thanks!

    staff-doublebassd THANK YOU!

  • Of course, @christinemaze! Nice troubleshooting – this was a tough one to crack. =)

    Hi staff-doublebassd,

Thanks very much for your help!

Would be able to advise how to create this – as you can see from this screenshot I can only add a subdomain to “hestan.uk.com”?

    Thanks :)

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m just contacting my domain registrar now, so I’ll let you know if we can get it sorted :)

    Thanks @christinemaze and staff-doublebassd!

    Hi staff-doublebassd,

Just want to check – do we have to re-map this domain in WordPress as “.uk.com” and then add “hestan” in the cname record as the subdomain, or do we just need to add a cname record with our domain registrar?

    Thanks

Hola en agosto hemos renovado nuestro contrato con WordPress, y cuando nos hemos incorporado de las vacaciones nos encontramos sin acceso a nuestro sitio web. Nos urge solución. Gracias

  • Hi there,

Just want to check – do we have to re-map this domain in WordPress as “.uk.com” and then add “hestan” in the cname record as the subdomain, or do we just need to add a cname record with our domain registrar?
    Thanks

Just add the cname record with your domain registrar and then let me know when that is done. You can go to step 2 of the instructions once you have added the cname – I unmapped hestan.uk.com from your account and gave you £11 if paid credits to purchase the subdomain. If you have any trouble during that process, let me know. Thanks!

  • Hi @izapsalgmailcom,

I would love to assist you, but in order to keep threads on topic, I wanted to see if you could create a new post?: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1
    Thanks!

    Hi staff-doublebassd,

We’ve asked our domain registrar to follow the instructions in the link you sent and they’ve responded with the below:

hestan.uk.com is correctly connected to the WordPress namesevers, and it resolves through to them successfully.

I do note that you appear to have a CNAME record at WordPress’ nameservers for host “@” or “hestan.uk.com”, pointing back to uk.com. This may be the source of whatever issues you have been experiencing.

Should I map “uk.com” in WordPress and then add “hestan” subdomain in the CNAME record, to see if this solves the issue?

    Thanks,

    Jason

  • Hi there,

    Per the instructions:

Note: You should NOT change your Name Server information if you wish to only map a subdomain.

I see that the nameservers are still pointed over to us. If you change the nameservers back to your host and follow the other directions, in the support page – I want to see what happens then. Let me know.

    Thanks!
