Mapped Domain Question, Please Help

  Hello
  I have a domain name already registeed, I know I can map the domain to my “example.wordpress.com” blog so the domain looks better (ie) “example.com

  My question is if I forget to renew my domain and it expires and I don’t get it back will I lose all my content and my blog completely ? Or do I still always have the original “example.wordpress.com” blog including all its content as a back up?

  I really need to know this before I consider mapping the new domain as the good thing about the original free “example.wordpress.com” blog is I know it will always be there and secure / backed up and safe as the domain name will never expire .

  Any help is much appreciated .
