  Why is there charges for mapping my free wordpress account to my new wordpress domain/account?

  Are you trying to connect a domain you purchased elsewhere to emonedge.wordpress.com, with domain mapping?

  https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

  If so, mapping is a feature of paid plans (Personal, Premium and Business), which is why you are being asked to upgrade.
