Mapping a .ca domain
-
I’ve posted two requests through this blog’s control panel, but have had no answers over the past two days or so. In searching through the forums exhaustively, it looks to me as though I need to ask WordPress.com to create a zone so that I can map an existing .ca domain to the WordPress site that I’ve created, but I need confirmation of this. I’d be grateful to know (a) whether I can map a .ca domain to a WordPress blog, (b) what needs to happen at the WordPress end so that I can do this and (c) what I need to do in terms of changing dns or name servers where the domain is actually hosted. Thank you.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I have flagged this thread for Staff attention so they will provide you with a zone record.
(a) yes
(b) see above
(c) see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ -
Thank you so much for the response and for flagging this for WordPress staff; it’s greatly appreciated.

timethief, no worries. :)
ashtontax, I have manually added a zone record for your domain.
You should now be able to map it here following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
Please let us know if you need any further assistance!

Thank you very much for the quick attention; it’s much appreciated.
I’m now getting a hard time from the contact at the domain/email host about mapping to the WP nameservers rather than an IP (and I’ve explained why we can’t map to an IP address). I’ve been through this before, so I know it can be done, but it’s very frustrating. In order to protect email arrangements with their custom domain name at their other host, my understanding is that they can change the nameservers for the domain mapping to WordPress, but create custom dns to protect the email. Is there anything else that I can tell them about this? I’m feeling lost and the WP documentation about this has its limitations. Thanks again.

Yes, once you direct the nameservers to us, you’ll need to direct a few MX records back to your email provider via your Custom DNS panel. You can get the MX records from your email provider.

My contact is concerned that WordPress wants total ownership of the DNS and is putting a foot down about doing so.
I know that when I did this last year for another client, who also has their domain and email hosted at yet another host, I was able to point the name servers but did not have to enter MX records in the WP control panel as you’ve described. That client is using a domain-based email address and service was never affected. I’m really feeling lost in this; is there a way where we can make this work without the perceived lost of dns control?
-
Domain Mapping requires you to point your nameservers to us, which does mean that we would also have “control” over the DNS, but you actually have control over this yourself via the Custom DNS panel.

We’ve finally got to the stage where we have been able to change the domain’s nameservers (hosted elsewhere) to the WordPress ones, and updated the MX records in the control panel so that the email keeps working. We did this 24 hours ago. Emails are working well, but the domain name still isn’t resolving to the WordPress site properly. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Sorry; I just realized that I hadn’t set the new domain as the primary domain in the control panel. All set!

Hi,
I am also looking for some help to add a zone record for my .ca domain (animages.ca).
Thanks in advance !

@encarmel
There’s no blog linked to your WordPress.com username. Please post the URL of the .wordpress.com blog that you want to map from to your domain. I’ll falg this thread for Staff attention and they will provide a zone record. Then you can follow this guide to map to an existing domain > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain -
Oups…
Thank you thistimethisspace for your quick answer.
