Mapping a domain
-
I just bought a domain from another site. It looks like it will cost me a $8.25 monthly WP subscription to use a domain on from somewhere else, even if I just want the basics that the $2.99 package has. A friend just signed up for Bluehost and she pays them $4 a month, uses her custom domain and doesn’t need a WordPress account subscription. Can you explain why this is.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi klhill01,
A custom domain can be mapped to your site on the Personal plan, which is $2.99 rather than $8.25.
You can confirm this no the pricing/plans page: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
So you should be able to add your domain without paying the higher Premium price.
You can find more info about mapping an existing domain here:

Let us know if you any further questions regarding mapping your domain!

Hi there,
It looks like it will cost me a $8.25 monthly WP subscription to use a domain on from somewhere else
If you are mapping a domain that you already own to be hosted here with WordPress.com, you need to purchase a plan (personal, premium or business. Personal is $3.99/mo billed yearly). This cost is you paying for WordPress to be your “host”.
A friend just signed up for Bluehost and she pays them $4 a month, uses her custom domain and doesn’t need a WordPress account subscription.
Your friend has BlueHost as her “host”, not WordPress.com. You are also able to use BlueHost as your host, as long as they support your domain.
Here are a few informational links to further explain how WordPress.com works with hosting outside domains:

Thanks- I don’t know why I didn’t see it as an option on the WP $2.99 plan the first time around.
I also didn’t really understand how it would benefit WP to give people the option to pay Bluehost a cheaper rate (when I thought it was $8.25) to use the domain, but I see the difference now. Thanks all.

@klhill01 this may help as well:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/At Bluehost you are running your own copy of WordPress. You maintain it yourself, and if you need support, you can head to https://wordpress.org/support and ask the community there.
If you have a paid plan with us, we provide direct support and maintain the installation for you. I hope that helps a bit.
