mapping a domain
-
Hi. I currently own the domain ‘nicklavigne.ca’ through Godaddy, however, I would like to only deal with WordPress once I build my site. Is it possible to map my doamin from Godaddy, but then cancel entirely with them, and then have WordPress host this particular domain?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey nicklavigne,
If you want to control your domain and the hosting at one place, you can transfer the domain to WordPress.com.
For which, you have to buy a paid plan where you can use a custom domain. Please read these support document.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I wasn’t as clear as intended in my post, sorry. I neglected to mention that the domain I own via Godaddy is a ‘.ca’ domain where, upon signing up with WordPress, I was informed I could not transfer a ‘.ca’ domain, only map it.
In order to make sure I don’t lose this domain name, I was wondering if I could first map it to WordPress, then cancel with Godaddy, and then have WordPress take over hosting the domain title. Is this doable?
(Sorry for the confusion. I’m new!)
Thanks
Nick

Hi there,
If you cancel the domain with GoDaddy, it will go through a redemption phase of several weeks, similar to an expired domain, before it becomes available for registration again, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to register it again once it does. If you cancel a domain you are essentially saying you no longer want to own it, and you lose all claim to it, so it’s not a good way to move a domain to another provider.
As we don’t currently support transfers for .ca domains, that means the safest option is for you to keep the domain with GoDaddy, and map it here. We do hope to be able to transfer .ca domains in future.

Thanks so much for help! That clears things up.
Out of curiosity, if I map to WordPress and use my ‘.ca’ domain name but then cancel with Godaddy, what will my website domain name on WordPress change to?
Thanks!

Hi –
If the domain gets cancelled then it will stop working. When that happens the site reverts to the free .wordpress.com address.
