Mapping a domain and hosting
-
Hello,
Just a quick question, I have offered to set up a blog for a friend and I’d like to use a .co.uk extension for the domain.I know I can’t do this all through WordPress and I’ll need to buy the domain separately and then map to it, but what I need to know is (and this might be a really daft question!) …
can I just buy the domain name (i.e. is the blog hosted by WordPress?) or do I need to buy the domain name AND hosting in order to map the domain to the blog?
I haven’t set the blog up yet so there’s nothing to look at yet, but I want to make sure I get it right from the start!
Thanks so much

Hi Amy. If you want the site to be hosted by WordPress.com, buy the domain only and follow the steps here:

Hi,
I have a question in relation to this. If I buy a new domain name for my blog alcfez.wordpress.com, does the domain name show as the URL when I am on the blog? Or does the URL show as alcfez.wordpress.com?
I don’t wish to have just a redirect, but would prefer the domain URL to show.
Thanks,
Suzanna

If you buy a domain and map it as noted above your visitors will see your-site.com not alcfez.wordpress.com – when logged in you will see alcfez.wordpress.com IF you are in your DASHBOARD (control panel area)

Hi Suzanna,
I’ve already bought a domain name for my website (amy-lambert.com) and that’s what shows up as the URL.
Once your new domain is linked up to your blog you have to change it to be your primary domain or your wordpress one will still show up… it tells you how to do this in the link that airoddessy posted in the previous comments as well… http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
Hope that helps :)
