Hi there. If you buy or map a custom domain, ALL you get is a custom domain.
To edit your site’s CSS you will need to buy the custom design upgrade, which is entirely separate from domain registration or domain mapping. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
NO upgrade will enable you to edit your site’s html as we don’t have FTP access on WordPress.com: http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
NO upgrade will enable you to add third-party advertising to your site as advertising is not allowed on WordPress.com, though with a custom domain you’ll be able to apply to join the WordAds program: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/
http://wordads.co/faq/It makes no difference whether you buy your domain from WordPress.com or whether you buy it from GoDaddy and map it to WordPress.com, because in both cases you’ll still be hosted by WordPress.com and thus will have to abide by the WordPress.com terms of service. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading
If you want features like FTP access and advertising, you’ll need to leave WordPress.com completely and instead buy both a domain AND hosting from another provider (like GoDaddy) and then install the WordPress.ORG software to that site. You’ll be able to do whatever you like with it (within your host’s terms of service), but it will cost much more and you won’t have the tech support you currently have with WordPress.com – if something breaks you’ll have to fix it yourself.
