Mapping an already registered domain

Am I able to upgrade to a personal subscription and still map an already registered domain, or do I have to upgrade to a Premium subscription? I don’t need the features of a higher subscription at this time, but the Premium subscription is automatically selected when I select the Already have a domain option. Also, how do I get the renewal of my domain’s registration transferred to WordPress?

you cannot transfer your domain to wordpress.com , only mapping your existing domain is possible

How about the first question? Do I have to upgrade to Premium to map that domain, or can I upgrade to Personal?
