mapping blog to a 1and1 domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a domain I own through 1and1, and I have followed the instructions here to map my wordpress blog to it: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

When I purchased the domain mapping add-on for wordpress, the next screen gave instructions to also change the CNAME in my DNS settings, but I can’t find these same instructions anywhere now!

So is it nessecary to also change the CNAME, or are the instructions in the link enough? I’ve only just done it, so waiting for the changes to take place, but any advice for a newbie much appreciated!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi calmmindyoga,

Is the domain you setup mapping for calmmindyoga.co.uk?
It doesn’t appear that domain is currently registered to anyone.

If it’s a different domain you’ve setup the mapping for let me know what it is and I’ll take a look for you.

Thank you for the reply! That’sthe thing, I’m not sure if I have set up the mapping properly, but the domain is definitely mine – looks like you missed the co. from the address :)

    Hi calmmindyoga,

This is the domain I looked up calmmindyoga.co.uk is that the domain you registered? If not can you provide the one you did register.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, that is the domain I registered.

the .co.uk is registered with me, the .uk is not registered

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks sorry about that, I do see it registered now and the DNS are set to WordPress.

If in your Dashboard you go to Store then My Domains you should see something like this
    https://cloudup.com/c6L_hLvVTlD

As long as your domain is listed there I would say it looks like everything is setup.

It can take anywhere from 24-72 hours for DNS to propagate so that the domain will point to your blog, but usually in my experience it is faster than that.

Great, thanks for your advice – I have so much to learn! It looks like it’s set up as your screenshot, so I’ll check it again tomorrow and fingers crossed.

Until your new domain starts working for you, you could change your primary domain back to your wordpress.com address. That way if you want people to they can still access any content you have there.

Then once the new domain is resolving, you could go back and set it as the primary again.

Just in case I’m going to tag staff to have a look to make sure the domain mapping is setup right for you.

  • Hi there!

I found a small problem in the way the domain mapping upgrade was setup. I can see that you included the “www” in front of the domain, and this may cause the upgrade to malfunction. I’ve rectified this, and your domain is now loading your blog normally.

Let me know if things are working properly on your end. Thanks!

It loaded for me as well hopefully it does for you too @calmmindyoga.

I did a dig on the domain using the WordPress name servers and things didn’t look right.

Thanks for getting it working @druesome!

  • Unknown's avatar

unfortunately not working for me… I clicked on druesome’s link and got the standard ‘Probem loading page’ page (text below), this is after clearing my cache.
Also, why shouldn’t I have www in front of the domain?

    ————————–
    Server not found

Firefox can’t find the server at calmmindyoga.co.uk.

Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of http://www.example.com
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

And on my iPad, the home screen works, bt for any other pages I get “Server with the specified hos nme could not be found”

  • Hello again!

Changes in DNS typically take a few days before they fully propagate on the Internet. Rest assured that if it is working for me and Sandy, it shouldn’t take long for you as well.

As a possible way to speed things up, you can try clearing your browser cache and loading your site afterwards.

    Hi

I’m having exactly the same problem – I own goodmanmusic.co.uk thru 1and1… I changed the name servers on my 1and1 account to the wordpress same servers some weeks ago but I still have this message when I go to my domain management on wordpress:

Your nameservers need to be set to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM and NS2.WORDPRESS.COM for these DNS records to work. If you have already updated the nameservers you can ignore this message; it will stop appearing soon.

and indeed I can’t load my wordpress site when I try to navigate to my domain.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

    Thanks

    Joshua

    Hi goodmanjoshua,

It is really best to start your own topic in the forums if you have having problems.

But since you are here. I did a lookup on your domain name
    http://www.nominet.org.uk/whois/lookup?query=goodmanmusic.co.uk
And it doesn’t appear that your name servers have been changed.

You should contact the company you registered the domain with and see that the changes take effect.

    Hope that helps.

  • Hey @goodmanjoshua,

I’ve visited your domain and looks like it’s pointing to your blog correctly now. Cheers!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thank you both

I have sorted it now. It turns out I had forgotten that I was actually pointing at 1and1 anyway and that the domain was registered with 123 Reg (d’oh…)

Thanks also for the tip about forum etiquette… I’m really quite new to this world!

  • No problem at all! Glad you got things sorted out. Cheers!
