Mapping Cost and WordPress Plan Cost

  If I want to host a website on WordPress that is registered elsewhere, do I need to do the ‘mapping’ that WordPress website is pushing me to, and for which it charges $17/year? Does this $17 put me on any package with WordPress, or once I pay my $17 and do the mapping they then force me to buy their plan as well?

  Hi, you’re not forced into any of it, but you’re welcome to choose what works for you.

  You can map so that yourdomain.com forwards in an SEO friendly way to your WordPress.com site. Or you can buy a plan that includes that and shows your domain of choice.

  Personally I’d encourage you to get a personal plan since mapping is free, ads are gone, and you get to use your custom domain as primary.
