Mapping DNS of a .no domain with the norwegian letter ø

  • Unknown's avatar

The nameserver ns1.wordpress.com does not answer authoritatively to requests for the zone xn--pottiterogbrd-mnb.no.

For .no domains the nameservers must be configured correctly before the delegation can be completed. Not all ISPs are aware of this. Please contact the administrators of the nameservers you are trying to use, and ask them to create a valid zone file for xn--pottiterogbrd-mnb.no on all the nameservers.

  • Howdy,

WordPress.com doesn’t support Internationalized Domain Names at this time ( http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#internationalized-domain-names-idns ), so we’re unable to map a domain with an ø in it.

You can cancel and have your upgrade refunded via the My Upgrades page or I can cancel it for you and apply the payment as a credit if you’d like to map a different domain.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything else I can do. Thanks!

I am sorry to hear that WordPress is not able to map IDNs. Considering the large number of WP users that actually do use IDN letters it should be very appopriate to make this service available for the international users.

Are there any plugins for WordPress that will allow me to map a IDN domain?

Did you check whether the domain name xn--pottiterogbrd-mnb.no could be mapped? This does not contain any ø, but I still get this Message from my registrar:

  • Hi Anne,

I removed the upgrade and credited your account with the $13. When you add a new domain, on the checkout page, the credit will appear and you’ll be able to checkout without additional payment.

On WordPress.com, there isn’t a way to use an IDN. With the self-hosted WordPress.org, where you use your own hosting solution, if your host supports IDN, you can still use it. More about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org is at WordPress.com and WordPress.org. We have some of the many hosts at http://get.wp.com/hosting/ though I don’t know offhand their support for IDNs, though I’m happy to research if you’d like.

The xn--pottiterogbrd-mnb.no domain is the technical domain behind the IDN and likewise can’t be mapped. IDNs work by having an alias of the IDN with the xn-- name. The way that system is built, our system doesn’t support that at this time. It is on our radar since, as you mentioned, it is important for our international users.

    Thanks!
