Mapping Domain: MX record transfer

    I currently own a domain name that is attached to another website. I realize that to transfer this I need to update my host’s “name servers” instead of transferring the domain. I contacted them (WestHost) to do so and they advised that I have WordPress enter my MX records so that our e-mail will not be interrupted and THEN have them change our “name servers”. Is it okay to do it in this order? I am doing this for a business and would like the gap in service to be as small as possible. And if so, about how long do you think our e-mail will be interrupted?
