    domain name and email issue

    Hi

I’m helping out a community group with the blog/website set up and between 3 different others – they brought a domain name http://www.thestitch.co.uk from 1&1 and also set up email through the same company but if I forward the domain name to their wordpress.com site it will break the email.

I wanted to see if you guys might have a suggestion or will I have to tell them that they have to get their email elsewhere but then I guess they couldn’t use the domain name as it will be ‘taken’ already – I’m sure there is a workaround but I’m used to having self hosted sites with my email so I’m drawing a blank!

Thank you for any help you can offer :-)

Hi there! You can easily keep their e-mail servers working by adding the necessary MX records on the WordPress.com name servers. Here’s a quick guide on setting that up for your clients.

    Add Email Through Other Providers

I take it that means they would have to purchase the wordpress upgrade to have the option of MX records – the £9 option (as they have paid for the domain name already) and cancel the email they set up with the other company?

    Thanks for responding Stothek :-)

The domain mapping upgrade to point an existing domain to a WordPress.com site will also allow you to use your external e-mail service. In fact, you pretty much have to use some sort of third-party e-mail service as WordPress.com doesn’t offer e-mail service other than simple forwarding.

    ok – got it.

Thank you – it’s good to get somewhere on this as I didn’t want to confuse things or end up asking them to pay out more than they need to.

    :-D
