Mapping Domain To Use As Site Address

I created my intenttoget.com website through BlueHost/WordPress. I have noticed that I have both a http://intenttoget.com/ and a https://intenttoget.wordpress.com/ site. Trying to figure out how I can combine these.

  • Hi there,

I was looking at your two sites, and I noticed that they were created with two different WordPress software. The http://intenttoget.com/ one was created with the self hosted version, often called as WordPress.org, meanwhile the other one was created with WordPress.com. These two sites, the .com and the .org, are two totally different companies/ entities.

You can read more about this here: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you are trying to bring content over from the .org site, you can use the Moving from a Self-Hosted WordPress to WordPress.com support page. The article explains it in details.

Going back to your original question, I don’t think it is possible to combine these two pages. You can certainly bring the two pages content together under one page with the solution I mentioned above.

Just a tip: since you already own the http://intenttoget.com/ domain I would try to keep that, and bring it over to WordPress.com. You have two options for that. Domain transfer or Domain mapping. This article explains the difference between this two. I would recommend Domain transfer so everything is under one provider, WordPress.com.

Hope this helps! Let me know if any question comes up.

Thank you for the quick response! From what I have read is that Newly-registered domains cannot be transferred until they are at least 60 days old, is this correct? It’s really weird because I never used WordPress.org to make this site. I started off from Bluehost and after creating my Webhosting I got immediately transferred to wordpress.com.

I’m not sure what else I can currently do since I literally just created this site today. Really would like to avoid waiting 2 months before doing anything since I don’t believe I did anything wrong. Just trying to figure out if there’s something I’m missing. Thanks again!

  • I see. That explains why I thought it was created with .org. That’s not a problem then.

Can you give more information then, what do you mean by combining these two site?

    Your site http://intenttoget.com/ –IS– a (so-called) WordPress.org site, not a WordPress.com site.

It’s really weird because I never used WordPress.org to make this site.

As @csabarakasz tried to explain, what people (erroneously) call “WordPress.org site” does not mean you go to WordPress.org to create the site. It just means you installed the free WordPress software, which is developed by the folks at WordPress.org, on their own hosting provider (Bluehost in your case)… and you manage the WordPress software updates yourself.

I started off from Bluehost and after creating my Webhosting I got immediately transferred to wordpress.com.

My guess is that after installing the WordPress software and site at Bluehost, their onboarding process included activating a plugin (possibly Akismet or JetPack plugin) that requires creating a WordPress.com account (not a site). That’s why you may have been transferred to WordPress.com.

So as it is now, you’ve already purchased a hosting account with Bluehost to host your WordPress site yourself on your domain http://intenttoget.com/.

This setup gives you the most flexibility, and it’s the approach most people go. But it also puts on you the huge responsibility of maintaining the WordPress software and all themes and plugins yourself, and ensuring your site is secure and everything works properly. All the news you hear about WordPress sites not being secure or getting hacked are a direct result of people not being able to handle this responsibility properly.

If this is the route you want to go (ie self-hosted WordPress site), you really don’t need to do anything. Just log in to your website at http://intenttoget.com/wp-admin and continue working on it.

You’ll still need the account you created at WordPress.com to use plugins like Akismet and JetPack on your Bluehost WordPress site. You can simply ignore the site https://intenttoget.wordpress.com/, or if you can completely delete it by following this link: https://wordpress.com/settings/delete-site/intenttoget.wordpress.com

    ON THE OTHER HAND…

If you want your WordPress website to be hosted with WordPress.com (instead of Bluehost), wherein you never have to bother with installing, updating, or otherwise managing the WordPress software yourself, then…

    1) There was absolutely no reason to have gone to Bluehost, to begin with, as you can get everything, including the domain name, from WordPress.com.

    2) Yes, it’s true that you cannot transfer a new domain name within the first 60 days of registration.

    3) But you can MAP or POINT the domain name to WordPress.com’s servers, even while the domain remains with Bluehost. You can find the instructions to do so below:

    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/

I hope that clears the apparent confusion.

    Good luck!

Thanks guys I really appreciate the help! You’ve left me some things to consider, but the initial confusion has been resolved. There’s a lot to learn with WordPress, but I can’t wait to get started!
