Mapping domain to WordPress – then cutting the cord with the old host?

    Hello people! Does anyone have experience on such a case? I own a domain on a web host and now I want to map it on WordPress. I don’t need the old hosts web hotel of 5Gbs. So now I’m thinking to migrating completely to WordPress BUT I want to keep my old domain. What would be the easiest way to cut the cord with the old host without the risk of losing my beloved domain? I’ve read that theres a certain time period after the domain becomes available again if I discontinue the domain on my old host. So I would have to first map the domain on WordPress – but after that…? Ps. Do I have to get the Premium plan to use my own domain or will the Personal plan do the trick? Pre-thanks for all!

    Hey sjkk,

    If I’m understanding you correctly, you got a hosting plan with <x website> and registered a domain name with them for an additional fee. Now you’d like to drop their hosting service, but keep your domain name and use it here at WordPress.com.

    If that is the case, you’ll first want to contact your hosting service and see if they will allow you to drop your hosting service but keep the domain for a smaller monthly fee. This would be great as it’s the easiest solution for you.

    Once that is complete (or even during the process) you can follow the directions below to complete your objective. This support page also answers your follow-up questions regarding what pricing plan you need on WP.com.

    Start with the above directions first, but if those options don’t work or are not available to you then you might have to change your domain registrar. This isn’t as easy of an option and can take more time but it can be done. I’d like to keep it simple for now, though, so I won’t be going into those details.
