mapping Domain URL problems

  • Unknown's avatar

I just paid the $17 for having my own url. Let’s pretend the name is Frank. So I paid to host it, and what I paid for was the idea I would have a blog called Frank.com
Instead, I now have a blog with this URL
    Frankdotcom.wordpress.com
This is a fiasco. There is one post that says it can take up to 3 days for the addresses to settle down, but there is a 2 day limit to cancel a domain name and get y money back.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Somebody please help. No response yet from support.

  • Unknown's avatar

    What help do you want?

Your account is only two hours old, you give us nether the site you are mapping or the Domain you have purchased.

Very difficult to help you if all you say is “help” – if you just mapped the domain then to expect much to happen that you can see is very unrealistic. Yes it can take a while for changes to work to the far corners of the internet.

You mention canceling your domain name. why? Don’t you like the new name?

A bit more information please or all we will tell you is Patience Grasshopper.

  • Unknown's avatar

The reason I might want to cancel it is because I am afraid somehow I ended up with the wrong thing.

Um, also, auxclass, are you support? I mean, if I wrote the specific URL I’m having problems with, are you the one who can fix them? Are there people on this forum who can access the accounts I’ve set up? I thought this was more like an advice free-for-all. I gave the specific information about the problem URL in my private messages to Support. But since it’s been 6 hours and I haven’t heard anything back, should I just treat the forum as the place to give personal information about my account? Somehow that seems strange. Are you the one who can actually fix things?

  • Unknown's avatar

@osha, this is a volunteer forum, but if we have the URL of your blog and the URL you registered, at least we can do some DNS and such tests. If we don’t have that information, then there is absolutely nothing we can do past sending you to the support pages and/or tell you to contact support. Generally support returns contacts within 24 hours. Have you by chance checked your email provider spam filter? Sometimes their emails end up getting caught by overactive spam filters.

    OK details:
I ended up with a blog with the following address
    http://www.communityherbalismdotcom.wordpress.com

This is not, as you can guess, what I wanted.
I can’t find a way to delete this incorrectly URLed but correctly named blog.

I paid for domain mapping under the category “create a new domain hosted by wordpress”
what I wanted and paid for was
    communityherbalism.com

The payment was made and accepted.

If it is just a matter of waiting a day or two and everything will magically work out right, then that ought to be said as such, so that myself and others don’t panic.
If it’s not just a matter of waiting for magic, then who can actually fix this? Honestly, I’d rather give this info privately to some support staff and not publicly to all forum readers, but you all are the only ones who respond. (For which I am very appreciative)
Thanks for your help trying to remedy this distressing situation.

No personal info or email addresses etc.

I am an unpaid volunteer that helps from time to time.

The blog you are mapping to your-new-blog.wordpress.com and your-new-domain.com are considered standard pieces of information to give us a chance to help you and are public anyway (most people get a site to share information / experiences with others) – my name for instance maps to my main site.

You can start blogging with your-new-blog.wordpress.com as soon as you have signed up. (The 5 minute thing – and I can attest that it does work that way)

The domain mapping can take 24 to 72 hours for the information to work to the ends of the internet.

Your Domain registration is within seconds. The part that takes time is for the domain mapping to take effect.

The reason we ask for the domains & URL is so we can make sure you are in the correct Forum and it lets us for instance look and make sure your domain was purchased or to see where the name-servers are pointing.

If you have made an error in the spelling of the domain name then by all means cancel the domain and start over. Also by having information about your domain and sites makes it easier to pass information on – the Staff does stop by the Forum’s on a regular basis and the Moderators will flag and pass on threads that have persistent problems that are better addressed by the Staff to the Staff.

Yes it is a bit confusing even as I read over what I have above – but on average the Forum works well – and all of us do try and help – it can take a few hours for Staff to respond at times, my experience has been good with Staff for problems getting my site transferred.

    Hope this helps a bit.

On the 24-72 hour delay: That is simply how long it takes for the DNS changes to propagate through the tens of thousands of internet name servers connected to and scattered around the world. These servers tell the browser when they type in mysite.com what the actual numbered address is for the location that site is physically hosted at. This isn’t something that is in the hands of wordpress, it is in the hands of ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

Generally, if everything was set up right when you did the mapping, your site should start to show up under the new domain name within 6-12 hours and by 24 hours it should be completely stable. This would happen no matter where you set up a blog.

A typical day on the internet for DNS and domain activity:

    Number of domains deleted: 388,629,214
    Number of new domains: 137,085
Number of domains that expired: 91,145
Number of domains that were transferred: 130,412

Each and every one of the above require an update to the records in the tens of thousands of DNS nameservers scattered around the world.

So I get it that the mapping can take time.
    BUT:
Is it normal that a URL gets created like the one I am experiencing?
    communityherbalismdotcom.wordpress.com

There is no way for me to know if I misspelled something, I can’t figure out what went wrong or even IF something went wrong. I’m still waiting to hear
    a) “your exact situation is completely normal. nothing is wrong. all will be right in 2 days or so.”
    or
    b) “something is not right. we are looking into it. here are some of the possibilities: perhaps you spelled something wrong. perhaps there is a step you took that needs to be undone, or a step you haven’t taken yet that needs to be done. We are looking into it.”

So far, although I appreciate your words of patience and encouragement, I am still in the dark

I take it that when you initially set up the blog here, that you typed communityherbalismdotcom in as the blog name you wanted, is that correct (before actually buying the domain name and domain mapping)?

I’ve never experienced wordpress just making one up on its own, nor have I heard of anyone having that happen.

Is this the domain that you registered and paid for the domain mapping on communityherbalism.com?

  • Unknown's avatar

No. I did not type communityherbalismdotcom for anything.
Actually, I don’t totally understand the last question you asked, the syntax is difficult.

I never wrote communityherbalismdotcom for anything that I wanted. I don’t understand how it came into existence and I don’t understand if it relates to communityherbalism.com or if it is a misformed mutant entity that came into being on its own.

I bought the domain first, then tried to create a blog with the name that I’d created. I can understand if that was the wrong thing to do, but there aren’t any instructions like
“don’t try to set up a blog with the name of the domain you just registered. Wait 72 hours before you try to do anything.”

  • Unknown's avatar

@thesacredpath – looks like our posts got hung up somewhere and shuffled a bit – I don’t remember seeing one of your posts above mine until I just checked – magic I guess.

@osharoot – don’t worry about this spelling error – you can have more than one blog on the same account – many people keep a test blog somewhere that we can learn and test on before changing a main site – http://communityherbalismdotcom.wordpress.com/ – just leave this as private for the time being.

  • Unknown's avatar

Do NOT delete anything: you risk deleting the blog that you’ve just purchased the upgrade for, and then you’re hooped. Just set it to Private for now and wait till the thing settles down.

When you sign up here, your username becomes the name of the blog, ie Dude user gets Dude.wordpress.com for the URL. You can create Whateverelse.wordpress.com later any time and just import your old posts into that and leave Dude.wordpress.com empty. It’s just important to make sure the domain is attached to the blog you want.

  • Unknown's avatar

    OK – the proper sequence

    1) – create a blog on WordPress.COM ( your-new-blog.wordpress.com) – you would enter “your-new-blog” or what ever you want. (could also be done 2nd)

    2) Register your domain (your-new-domain.com) (this can also be done first – does not matter)

    3) Map your-new-domain.com to your-new-blog.wordpress.com using the Domain Mapping Upgrade.

    4) then the wait begins for the internet to stabilize.

If you get stuck then the Staff should be able to help – yes it can take a few hours but they have a good record.

  • Unknown's avatar

OK, osharoot, if you bought the domain name first, then wordpress probably created that blog for you so that you would have somewhere to map it, otherwise it would be just a domain name without a home.

Generally the best thing to do is to create a blog and then buy the domain and mapping.

Either way, once you hear back from staff, if you want to move the mapping and domain to a different blog you created, they can do that for you easily.

    Could someone check htty://expellingthedarkness.com

I just registered this domain today, and it is not working either. I registered it through wordpress.com and it is even in the domain section of my dashboard. However, when I go to the “manage your domain” page, it is no where to be found. I was just wondering if mine got lost in cyberspace, or if it too will take 24-hours to get set up. Thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

Also, is it true that I have 24-hours to cancel and get my money back. The reason is because I mispelled my first domain and I spent 17 extra dollars to get a new one. I’d like to delete the old one if possible.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes there is a refund period for misspelled etc. sorry I can’t remember the time frame – but best to request the refund as soon as possible on the spelling error.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/cancel-domain/

Don’t delete your-site.wordpress.com – if you have a spelling error or what ever just turn it into a test blog. once your-site.wordpress.com is gone it can never be used again.

The your-spelling-error.com can be deleted etc.

  • Unknown's avatar

It used to be that you could get a refund on a domain registration or mapping I think within two days (go to upgrades in your dashboard and scroll down to the bottom), but since Automattic is now a full-fledged domain registrar, I don’t know if that will remain true.

Definitely contact them as soon as possible so that the date on your original contact is within the two day period.
