Mapping Domains

  • Unknown's avatar

I need help linking a domain! I followed (or I think I followed) all of the instructions to map a domain (which is hosted by WordPress) to the my WordPress site. I cleared my cache history and all of that stuff but whenever I type in my new domain (utflo.org) it just loads for a long time. If I switch the domain back to the .wordpress.com domain the page loads instantly if that makes sense. Do you understand my questions or should I provide more clarification, or do I need to be linked to a different department? Basically I just need my utexasflo.wordpress.com website to be linked to the utflo.org domain. Thanks for the response in advance.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

It looks like your domain mapping is set up correctly, but you still need to change the nameservers for your domain to WordPress.com’s:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM

    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM

    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

Once you do, you’ll need to wait a few hours for propagation to occur. During that time, if you visit your site it may load for a while or there may be an error. That is totally normal. You just need to have patience and it will eventually resolve itself (within 72 hours) and your site will come up normally!

Okay! Well I looked up the instructions on how to change my name servers (http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/) however, whenever I click on “Edit Domain” the only two options I have on the left side are “Email” and “Edit DNS”. Are either of those two what I should be looking for or am I looking for something somewhere else?

Does it matter if this domain is hosted by WordPress itself?

You are indeed looking for something somewhere else. It looks like your domain is registered with a company called “DNC Holdings” according to the Whois:

    http://who.is/whois/utflo.org

You’ll need to log in there and change your nameservers to the ones I listed previously.

If the registrar mentioned in those whois records isn’t you, then you may not actually own the domain. You may have just purchased domain mapping thinking that you were getting the full domain (which sadly isn’t the case). If so, let me know and I will cancel the mapping and give you a refund for it. You can think about it and register a new domain some time later!

Okay, I went to the DNC Holdings website and changed the name servers to the ones you gave me but the website still isn’t coming up and it has been more than 72 hours, would this be an issue on the WordPress side or the DNC side? If it’s on the DNC side do you have any advice on how I should proceed?

    Hi Steve,

It doesn’t actually look like the nameservers were changed. If you look at the nameservers at the Whois site I referenced before:

    http://who.is/whois/utflo.org

They’re still showing the same ones I mentioned previously instead of ours. You may want to reach out to DNC’s support staff to see what needs to be done on their end to get those nameservers changed. That’s the best that i can recommend.
