Mapping Existing Domain Name But Not Amending DNS Settings Until After The Creation Of The New Websi

Hi. I currently have a non WordPress website (hosted elsewhere) and would like to create a WordPress website using the same domain as I’m currently using. I understand that during the set up of the WordPress site, I can ‘map’ my existing domain name to my new site. Ideally, I’d like to create the new WordPress site in the background whilst my current site remains live so I that can create the new WordPress site over the next couple of weeks and then amend the DNS settings to put the new WordPress site live on my current website address, once it is complete. My question is – during the initial sign up to WordPress Business, can I click on ‘Map existing domain’ and then go on to build the new WordPress site (hosted by WordPress) and then (once ready) amend the DNS settings to put the new website live, on the old domain – or – will I need to map my existing domain, and then amend the DNS settings before I can create the new WordPress site – meaning anyone visiting my website during this period will see a half finished website or a holding page? I hope that makes sense. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ian.

Hi @lifesavingtraining, no problem. There are a number of ways to go about this, but probably the simplest is to wait to map the domain. You could use the wordpress.com-based address for development.
There are other ways to do it too: mapping the domain but keeping the wordpress.com site primary, mapping it but pointing your personal DNS over this way, and so on. If you don’t mind using the free address for development though, there’s no need for the other steps.

Thanks for your response. I think I’ll probably just develop on a free address in that case and then map later once everything is ready go live as long as it’s easy enough to change over. Thanks.
