Mapping my blog to a URL that doesn't have "wordpress" in it

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to change my blog’s domain name from http://www.andieduncan.wordpress.com to just http://www.andieduncan.com, which I own. I thought I had the WordPress bundle that included this feature, but when I went to activate it, it wants to charge me $13
    (https://andieduncan.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains)
Do I have to pay for this on top of what I’ve already purchased from WordPress?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

You can use your domain andieduncan.com with your blog at no extra cost, since your blog has the WordPress.com Premium upgrade. When you enter your domain on the Domains page in your dashboard and click the “Add domain to blog” button, you’ll be taken to a page where you can confirm that you own the domain. On that page, you should see this message near the bottom:

It would normally cost $13.00 a year but it is free as part of your WordPress.com bundle.

Can you give that another try? If it tries to charge you to add the domain, please let me know. You can also make a screenshot of what you see on the screen if that happens. You can upload screenshots to your Media Library under Media > Add New in your dashboard, or you can use an online service like Snaggy.

Hi – it happened again when I did as you suggested. I’ve uploaded 2 screenshots into my media library entitled “Domain Name Add-On Pg 1” and “Domain Name Add-On Pg 2” to show the issue.

ALSO … I made changes to my settings (somehow?) when trying to change to this new URL which issued some kind of authentication process into the mix, but now I’m completely shut out of my WordPress app on my phone, and can’t get back in. My original password doesn’t seem to work anymore, nor does one of the verification barcodes I was given.

    HELP!!!

    Hi there,

Sorry for the trouble with that! Thanks for uploading the screenshots. I fixed the issue on our end and went ahead and added the domain andieduncan.com for you. If you’d like, you can make andieduncan.com the primary domain on your blog by going to Store > Domains in your dashboard. :)

I’m completely shut out of my WordPress app on my phone, and can’t get back in.

Since you have two-step authentication enabled on your account, you’ll need to generate an application-specific password for the WordPress app on your phone. You can do that by following the instructions here: Two Step Authentication – Application-Specific Passwords

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this. :)

Ok, 2 problems: I tried to assign “andieduncan.com” as my primary address, but when I clicked my blog’s link, I got a “this webpage has a redirect loop” prompt.

So I contacted Go Daddy, as they’re my domain host, and spoke with a rep who told me I need to change my DNS (?) settings on my blog before I take the “forward” prompt off my domain, otherwise it won’t work.

Sorry, I should have warned you about the possibility of getting that message.

After you change the primary domain on your blog, it can take a while for your computer to update the domain. In the meantime, you can get a “redirect loop” error. However, that will go away after some time, as your computer updates the information for your domain.

You can also try to force your computer to update sooner, if you’d like, by flushing your computer’s DNS cache. However, you don’t have to do this. If you wait a day or two, your computer should fix the error on its own.

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this. :)

Oh, sorry! Please ignore my last message. I got confused by the domain forward that’s set up with GoDaddy on your domain. I’m very sorry about that.

Before you make any other changes, you’ll need to change your domain’s name servers, so the domain points to WordPress.com. We have more information about that here: Map an Existing Domain

You’ll need to change your domain’s name servers to the following:

    • NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

That needs to be done at GoDaddy, so you can ask their support for assistance with that step. Then, you can remove the domain forwarding, and your domain will work here at WordPress.com.

I don’t understand … if I leave it for a day or two, does that mean no one can access my blog for 2 days if they go to andieduncan.com?

  • Unknown's avatar

(Your message came in after I sent mine …) ok, I’ll try that next. Thx …

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry for the confusion. Once you point the domain to WordPress.com, you’ll able to change the primary domain to your domain name. If you run into any other problems with it, please let me know. :)

    Mission accomplished – thanks! :)
