Mapping, redirect, ads, affiliates
-
I want to make sure I am understanding things correctly.
If I upgrade to a custom domain, I will need “mapping” to direct traffic to the new domain. If I were to switch to a hosted blog at bluehost or the like, then I need “redirect” to sent the traffic to that site. Both are $13.
If I start with the custom domain and later switch to hosted, would I get credit for the part of the year of unused mapping, or would I have to pay $13 for mapping and then pay another $13 for redirect?
WordAds is only available for the custom domain hosted at WordPress.com. If I switch to a site hosted elsewhere, I can use google ads or any other, but not WordAds. Is that correct? If I eventually switch to a hosted site, I would have to give up WordAds, correct?
Can I apply for WordAds before I upgrade to the custom domain or do I have to upgrade first?
As I understand it, certain affiliate links will be acceptable at WordPress.com, but if I switch to a hosted blog there would be no limit on affiliates. Is that correct?
But I can always link to locations that sell my own self-created work, correct?
Sorry to have so many questions, but I am at a decision point.
Thank you!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, I think you’re correct on all points, although I’m not sure what affiliate links are allowed and which aren’t. I believe you do have to pay the additional $13 for site redirect.

You can point a domain to another hosting by updating the nameservers (or A records in a few cases) without needing a redirect. The redirect option is most often used by people without a custom domain who want to point their blogname.wordpress.com address to their new site at a new hosting provider.

These are separate upgrades, but it is unlikely you would need the redirect upgrade in this scenario.

If your site is hosted elsewhere, you can run any ad networks you’d like. Currently WordAds is only available for WordPress.com but we are hoping to extend our program to self-hosted sites in the future.

You must have a custom domain for a site to be considered for WordAds.

But I can always link to locations that sell my own self-created work, correct? We allow affiliate links but no actual advertisements linking to an affiliate site. Other hosting providers will have their own policies on this. You can certainly link to an Etsy page or something similar from WordPress.com, or include a PayPal button to sell such products with us. With the Business upgrade you can also utilize one of three ecommerce partners to use a shopping cart on your WordPress.com site.
