mapping subdomains : can't create subdomains trough registrar

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello dear WP.com people,

I created my portfolio on WP.com at iosphera.com. My domain was purchased at dynadot.com, and I have it mapped to my blog, working.

Now I created 2 new blogs to publish my portfolio in english and french, so I would like to map subdomains in order to have:

    – fr.iosphera.com mapping to iosphera2.wordpress.com
    – en.iosphera.com mapping to iosphera3.wordpress.com

I followed the instructions @ http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/ but I was not able to add CNAME records for these subdomains at my domain registrar.

So I wrote to them the following:

    QUOTE

One of my domains I have at dynadot (iosphera.com), is mapped to my porfolio at WordPress.com (iosphera.wordpress.com), it works perfectly.

Now I would like to map 2 subdomains to other WordPress.com blogs (in fact my portfolio in English and French). Concretely :

    – fr.iosphera.com mapping to iosphera2.wordpress.com
    – en.iosphera.com mapping to iosphera3.wordpress.com

I need to add CNAME records to point that subdomains to their respective blogs but I can’t figurate out how to do this.

    They answered the following :

    QUOTE

The domain iosphera.com is currently set to WordPress name servers. When name servers are in use, subdomains cannot be created with us. You would generally need to set up those subdomains with your web hosting provider.

If you needed to create subdomains for iosphera.com with Dynadot, you would have to switch over to our DNS. Using DNS will override the name server settings you currently have in place.

Does it means that I can’t set the subdomains with them and it can only be done through WP? In this case, is it possible?

Thank you very much for your help, I’m sure there is a solution !

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Since you’ve mapped your main domain to WordPress.com, you need to set up those subdomain CNAME records inside WordPress.com.

Here’s more information about how to do that (about half way down this page under Adding a Subdomain if your Domain is Registered Elsewhere and Mapped to WordPress.com):

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/

You can find all your domain controls inside your WPAdmin area for your main WordPress.com site under Store > Domains. Make sure you create your separate WordPress.com subdomain sites while you’re logged in to your main iosphera.com account as an administrator.

Done! thank you very much Susan.

I had seen this part of the tutorial before, but couldn’t make it work, because it says :

4.Note: if your domain is already registered with WordPress.com or mapped to a WordPress.com blog, you do not need to add any kind of CNAME record.

But yes, I had to add CNAME records for the subdomains, in the domain management panel of my main domain (Edit DNS). If not, the system wouldn’t let me pay the domain mapping upgrades, and it would send me back to the purchase domain mapping page with an error message

DNS CNAME for fr.iosphera.com needs to point to iosphera2.wordpress.com.

Thank you for your quick and efficient answer and have a good day.
