mapping to SSL domain

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I have a active wordpress.com blog account and I would like to map the website to my domain. However, the domain is uses SSL.

I tried mapping the domain using the instructions provided, but I receive the red warning page within Chrome that the page was not certified and may be dangerous. How would I properly remap the domain name?

    Thanks,

    Moses

    Hi Moses,

I see the browser security warning that you mentioned on your blog, and I am checking with our team to see what can be done about that. I’ll let you know as soon as I have more information!

    Hi Moses,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you about this. Because of how your domain uses SSL, it’s a bit of a challenge for mapping the domain on our end. Our developers are still looking into it, though, and I’ll let you know as soon as I have a definitive answer for you. :)

  • Hi Moses,

I’ve been looking into this for you to see if we could come up with a working solution and unfortunately at the moment there isn’t a solution we can offer that will allow for a subdomain of silentcirle.com to be mapped to WordPress.com.

There are a couple of technical things that cause the issue you are seeing.

Firstly, all our servers are configured to support both HTTPS and HTTP but we, obviously, only have SSL certificates for our own domains and so we can’t support SSL for mapped domains.

Secondly, the silentcirle domains are configured for HTTP Strict Transport Security in the pre-loaded lists for at least Chrome and Firefox so both these browsers automatically try and only talk to silentcircle.com subdomains over https which therefore means you will see the certificate errors.

You can find those lists here:

Based on this I propose the following possible solution for you:
    * We can remove the mapping from your site for the subdomain
    * You can then select another unregistered domain and register it for free using the domain credit included in WordPress.com Premium

I’m sorry that we can’t support SSL for your actual domain at this time but I hope this is a suitable solution.

    Hi Moses,

I wanted to check in with you about your subdomain. As Westi mentioned, unfortunately, we don’t have a solution for your subdomain blog.silentcircle.com.

However, I’d be happy to remove the mapping from your site and reset your WordPress.com Premium domain credit, so you can register another domain for your blog for free. Please let me know if you’d like to go ahead with this.

    Thanks,

I appreciate you following up with me. I believe we are going to stick with our present subdomain with the blog.
