My perlechampion.com is now redirecting to my perlesink.wordpress.com; however, the name in the browser still reads perlesink.wordpress.com. The $99 upgrade should have taken care of this so it’s just perlechampion.com. Please help.

@Timethief is correct.
You can go to Store > My Domains from your wp-admin dashboard to make your custom domain your primary domain.

Will the change affect my followers?
Not at all. Your followers will remain intact and will be able to access your site through both your wordpress.com address and your custom domain.
