Mapping vs Hosting

    I am not tech savvy and really need help. I currently have a wordpress.com account, however I just purchased a domain name elsewhere. I was advised to map it through wordpress.com .

    I was told the domain name is not currently ‘hosted’ anywhere and that’s why the ‘wordpress.com’ name still shows in the search engines. I am very confused by this and thought that once I mapped it through wordpress the wordpress.com address wouldn’t show anywhere. WordPress doesn’t automatically ‘host’ the new domain name? I though that’s what the annual fee mapping fee was for though I bought the domain elsewhere.

    Are there additional steps I need to take for hosting now? I thought mapping it to remain with wordpress took care if it automatically.
