maps.googleapis.com

Since when does creating a post in your text editor require javascript to be enabled for maps.googleapis.com?
Unless I allow Javascript in my Firefox NoScript-Addon for the mentioned domain the text editor refuses to show the buttons for formatting the text. Buttons like “b-quote”, “link”, “ul”, …
By the way, right after allowing Javascript for maps.googleapis.com and reloading, it also asks for doug1izaerwt3.cloudfront.net as well. What is that?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The maps.googleapis.com Javascript is linked to Google Maps embedding, which is tied in to the text editor. The other address you mentioned at cloudfront.net is linked to an internal tool we use.

Hi Rachel,
The maps.googleapis.com Javascript is linked to Google Maps embedding, which is tied in to the text editor.
Well, I anticipated it must have got something to do with Google Maps. The question is more of why does not allowing Javascript for a Google Service have prevent a loading of the WordPress text editor formatting buttons?
… is linked to an internal tool we use.
Sounds just so mysterious. NSA backdoor? ;)

Hi Martin,
I wanted to get back to you about the maps.googleapis.com Javascript — I actually missed that this also controls the Geotagging feature for blog posts. Our developers took a look at it, and blocking this Javascript should no longer cause problems with the text editor. Thanks for pointing out this issue!

Hi Rachel,
wow, thanks a lot for fixing that. :-D
I refuse to enable Javascript for a site unless it’s essential. So having to enable it all the time just to write a post was very annoying.

I’m glad that iqatrophie’s problems are resolved, but it’s frustrating for some of us that the google maps feature turns out to be still there behind the scenes, when it is no longer being made available to users for geotagging our posts – see https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/new-geotagging-system?replies=6#post-1364052

I’ve come across another issue concerning maps.googleapis.com. Unless you allow javascript for the domain, you can’t edit the visibility options in the “Publish” module. In fact every “Edit” link (Status, Published on, Twitter) there doesn’t work.

Hi Martin, thanks for letting me know that this problem is back. I’ve notified our developers so they can take another look!

doug1izaerwt3 has all of a sudden appeared on my blog http://www.ukes4fun.org.uk too.
I notice you say it is part of an “internal tool” that you use.
Before I checked WordPress.com support I did an internet search and it comes up on WOT with some very worrying comments:
http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/doug1izaerwt3.cloudfront.net
Please can you reassure that this doug1izaerwt3.cloudfront.net javascript really is OK?
Best wishes,
Lizzie -
Hi Lizzie,
Yes, I can confirm that the doug1izaerwt3.cloudfront.net Javascript is okay. This is part of an internal tool we use called Kissmetrics. There’s nothing to worry about. :)

Many thanks for the reply :-)
WOT seems very unreliable as a way of gauging site-safety – too many times there are false-positives when sites are perfectly innocent.
Best wishes,
Lizzie
