Margin/Layout

  • Unknown's avatar

everything on my website right now seems to only be spread into the middle of the site and there is a lot of white space on the sides of all the content on all pages. It makes all the writing seem cluttered and elongated but not in a good way. How can I open the margins up on the website to utilize the space better?

The site I need help with is sarahlimktg.wordpress.com.

  • Hi there,

To make your text wider would require using Custom CSS code to override your theme’s design. This can only be done on the Premium Plan and higher.

That said, I wouldn’t recommend making your content area wider – while it feels like not all space is being used, that content width is actually set very deliberately: research have shown that the human eye can only comfortably read a certain amount of characters per line. If you make a line of printed text wider than that number of characters, people’s eyes have to move too much to read it, leading to fatigue, and it also makes it easier for people to lose their place when moving from one line to the next.

That’s why newspapers and magazines that are usually wider than books arrange their text in multiple narrower columns on a page, and why almost every website theme you’ll find will have the content area restricted to a similar width as what you see on your site. Even on our newer block editor themes, which support a full-width option for certain blocks, the full-width option isn’t there for plain text/paragraph blocks. In other words, you can have large, full-width images on the site, but text will always be restricted to a narrower column.

    Does that make sense?

Keep in mind that ultimately one should create a site for the people that will use it, i.e. your readers in this case, so while it doesn’t feel to you as if it looks right, how easy it is for your readers to use the site should be the more important factor :)
