Margins Are Way Too Big

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, so I have had no problems with my homepage margins but for some reason, the other pages have really big margins that I can’t make smaller even with using the wide width and I tried some CSS suggestions from other posts. It constrains the content to the point of ridiculousness and I’m not sure how to fix it. I’m working on my about section right now for reference. Thank you!

  • I understand that you are facing challenges adjusting the margins on your pages, particularly on the About page. If you open the About page for editing, you will notice it is using the Pages template. The template can be seen in the page settings on the right sidebar. To fix the About page and other pages on your website, you need to fix the Pages template.

Here’s a step-by-step guide for you to adjust the content width for the page template-

    1. Navigate to the Pages Template:
      • Go to the WordPress dashboard.
      • Select Appearance and then choose Editor.
      • Find and click on Templates and then select Pages.
      • Click on the pencil icon to edit the template.
    2. Open List View:
      • At the top left of the screen, you’ll see an icon that looks like three horizontal lines stacked above each other. Click on it to open List View.
    3. Check Group Blocks:
      • Examine each Group block within the template.
      • For any Group block not utilizing the full width of the page, click on the Align button in the block toolbar.
      • Change the width to Wide Width for those blocks.
    4. Save the Template:
      • After making the necessary adjustments, save the template.

These changes should reflect on all the pages across your website. If you encounter any challenges or need further assistance, you can refer to the WordPress support documentation on editing page templates.

I have already done all of this, it doesn’t change anything.

Thank you, I didn’t realize you had to change the template.

When I try to edit the template for the blog, it will only let me edit the home page, and the home page is also not showing up as one of my pages in the pages tab. So the margins can’t be changed for that page right now.

  • Hi there,

I visited your site and see that if I edit the Blog page, in the sidebar on the right it appears to be using the Pages template. This is what I see.

If you click on the “pages” link I’ve highlighted, it will take you directly to the template that this page uses so you will be able to edit the margins. You can also use this direct link to edit it.

If you click on the Content Block on that template, you will see the option to remove the default content width settings, which will allow content (on all pages that use this template) to expand to full width.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you. I have been able to edit that page. I’m talking about the Blog page, when I work on that template (there is a template for each page before the general template you’re talking about) it sends me to the homepage template, which is different from the one in your screenshot. I was able to edit the template for Community Heroes which is essentially the same as a blog, and while I can edit the page itself, I cannot edit the template for the page. I hope I communicated that sufficiently.

  • Thanks for clarifying. I’m still not 100% sure but getting a better understanding. I have a few more questions if that is OK.

I have been able to edit that page. I’m talking about the Blog page

You are referring to this page, yes? https://lastingworth.org/blog/

Admittedly it’s difficult to assess the margins in use on that page since it only shows one sample blog post. I wonder if I’m looking at something different from what you are seeing?

If I have that wrong, can you point out the URL of the page you are working on, and what you are clicking on to edit the template for that page? Possibly you are referring to the template that single blog posts use, such as this one? https://lastingworth.org/2024/01/12/hello-world/

Also if you are able to share any screenshots of the page you are working on, that may help us to get in sync with what you are seeing.

    Thanks for the additional info!

Yes that is the page I’m talking about. I have been trying to edit the template for that page but it takes me to the homepage instead.

  • All pages on your site (including your Blog page) use the Pages template to create the overall appearance. You can see that template here: https://lastingworth.org/wp-admin/site-editor.php?postType=wp_template&postId=lativ%2F%2Fpage&canvas=edit

This is the template where the content width is set, so editing this will affect not just your Blog page, but any page that uses this template as well. If you click on the Content Block (the one with the placeholder text in it) you will see on the right sidebar there is a way to turn off the default width settings for this theme. This will allow the content (such as your blog posts) to be full width.

You also have the option to set your own content widths in pixels by adding that to the Content and Wide boxes below, which will essentially allow you to create your own specific width for pages.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
